For many families, the end of high school marks the start of an exciting—and sometimes uncertain—new chapter. If your child or family member has intellectual or developmental
disabilities (I/DD), this transition can bring a flood of questions:
What happens after they age out of school services?
Will they be able to live independently?
How do we build a life that offers both support and freedom?
At Bella Stella Community, we’re here to help families navigate this pivotal time with compassion, clarity, and confidence.
Life After High School: A New Landscape of Possibilities
In school, support often feels built-in: IEP meetings, teachers, structured routines, and peer interaction. But once a student graduates or turns 22, many of those systems fall away. Suddenly, families are asked to piece together adult services with little guidance.
But here’s the good news: you don’t have to figure it out alone—and there are options that prioritize both independence and connection.
What Is Supported Living?
Supported Living Services (SLS) are for adults with developmental disabilities who want to live in their own homes—homes they choose, lease, and help shape—with the support they need to thrive.
This isn’t a group home or one-size-fits-all program. SLS is personalized. It grows with the individual and adapts to their changing needs, preferences, and goals.
At Bella Stella Community, SLS might include:
Learning how to cook, clean, and manage money
Building confidence in using public transportation
Navigating friendships, dating, or emotional health
Scheduling doctor appointments and managing medications
Setting up a daily routine that brings purpose and structure
Building a Life of Their Own—with a Team Beside Them
Transitioning to adulthood is about more than gaining new skills—it’s about finding identity, independence, and meaning. We help young adults step into their next chapter while offering families the reassurance that they are safe, supported, and celebrated.
You’re not being asked to let go—you’re being invited to share the load. Bella Stella’s team becomes part of your extended community, ensuring your loved one has both structure and self-direction.
Start the Conversation Early
If your loved one is 17 or older, now is the time to begin exploring adult services through your local Regional Center. The earlier you understand your options, the smoother the transition can be.
Whether your loved one is ready to live independently now or in a few years, Bella Stella can help map out what the future could look like—and how to make it happen, step by step.
You’re Not Alone—We’re Here to Help
The transition from school to adulthood doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right support system, young adults with developmental differences can live full, empowered, and independent lives.
Let’s talk about what’s possible. At Bella Stella Community, we believe the journey into adulthood should be filled with hope—and we’d be honored to walk it with you.
